Silence is around every noise, underneath every sound and waiting at the end of every echo.  Speaking from a mental construct, you can say that silence is what “isn’t” as opposed to what “is”.  In life our attention is drawn to what is; what stands out, but what is behind all the sounds that are standing out?  Silence.

To better understand silence, we can compare it to space.  The space in your living room is no different in this example than outer space.  It is no-thing, not a “thing”.  Your couch, walls, floor are all things but the space in between them is not a thing.  This is the same as silence – it’s what’s between the noise.  Objects or things capture our mental attention, but if we focus on space and silence we can sense what’s underneath it all…Source.  The Source of everything that ever has been, is now and ever will be.

Everything that has form rises out of the seeming nothingness.  The Source of everything is in the no-thing-ness, it’s not a thing, it’s what all things come from.  So if we focus our attention on silence or space we can experience what The Buddha referred to as Noble Silence.

Every religion and spiritual practice talks about silence being a gateway to Source, here are just a few:

– Be still and know that I am God.  ~Psalm 46:10

– Now be silent. Let the One who creates words speak. He made the door. He made the lock. He also made the key.~ Rumi

– You can hear the footsteps of God when silence reigns in the mind. ~ Sai Baba

Since connecting to our Source is what allows us to experience the love, safety, and peace that we all seek, silence should be a cherished archway to bliss that we pass through often.  There is nothing you need to learn, find, acquire or gain.  The silence is waiting for you to give it your attention and connect to all that you are seeking.
